Top 11 Cheap, Livable Cities in South America
Best places to live for under $2,000 a month in 2026
Ole’ South America, the land of stunning beaches, friendly locals, tanned skin, and of course, bunda.
But let’s not forget about…
The low cost of living.
While costs have gone up throughout the region, a man with a plan can still live an amazing life for $1,500-2,000 a month in South America…with ease.
After visiting 150+ cities and almost every country in the region, I’ve detailed the top 11 low-cost cities in South America that meet these criteria on a short-term basis:
Nice Airbnb options for $1,000 USD a month or less
All-in living for under $2,000 USD a month or less
Great lifestyle, eating out, partying, not living on a “local” budget
On a short-term basis means: you’re renting on Airbnb and paying a premium for it.
You’ll notice three regions weren’t included: Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America.
The Caribbean is not cheap. Period.
Central American cities are often quite dangerous, quite expensive, or both. For example, Panama City is a solid city with good infrastructure and safety, but you pay for it.
Mexico is an incredible country, irregardless of what the media tells you. However, it’s far from dirt cheap these days, especially when you factor in the plummeting exchange rate.
Overall, you’ll find better value in South America.
