Top 11 Beach Cities in LatAm for Red-Blooded Males
A subjective ranking of LatAm's best beach cities for the broski
You’re sitting on a stunningly beautiful beach in the tropics. There’s palm trees as far as the eye can see. The sand between your toes as soft as can be. The sunset is rolling in, coloring the sky a mesmerizing mix of neons.
There’s a beautiful bikini-clad Latina staring at you, trying to understand your broken Spanish. She’s laughing because she can’t understand a word you’re saying, but she doesn’t care.
You don’t either.
This is often the average red-blooded male’s first idea, the first thing that comes to mind, as they think about moving south of the border and traveling around Latin America.
It’s a total cliché: tropical beaches, bikini-clad Latinas, stunning sunsets, and all that jazz.
The reality of the situation tends to hit different once you’ve been down here long enough.
Few foreigners end up living full-time at the beach in Latin America.
The vast majority end up in cities far away from the sand, sea, and scantily-clad co-eds. Expat hubs like Medellin, Buenos Aires, and Mexico City being prime examples.
Still…
The draw of the beach, the bikinis, etc. cannot be discounted.
So with that in mind, I’ve put together a highly debatable list of the top 11 beach cities in Latin America — specifically for red-blooded males.
Quick Notes…
There’s a few things that must be said before we dive into this list.
First, this list is completely and utterly subjective.
There’s truly no way to accurately rank these cities. The majority of this article is strictly based on my personal experiences. The rest of it is based on conversations with trusted friends (travel autists) who spent time in different places than I have.
Did I miss some spots? For sure.
Is this list a fantastic starting point? Hell yeah.
Second, the main list features five different countries. However, the reality of the situation is this…
There’s an argument that every single beach city that’s best for the single broski traveling around can be found in one country:
🇧🇷 Brazil 🇧🇷
You could also argue that countries like Mexico and Venezuela more than hold their own in this category.
I decided to include a variety of countries on this list to keep things varied and interesting, as not everyone is excited about going to Brazil.
Lastly…
I’ve been sworn to secrecy about one beach city in Latin America. My homies would stop talking to me if I published it online.
But for yearly subscribers and founding members, you’ll find more details about “El Dorado” at this end of this article.
Top 11 Beach Cities in LatAm for Red-Blooded Males
Enough of me fluff for today…
Without further ado, here’s the best beach cities in LatAm for the single broski:
#1. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil 🇧🇷
Metro population: ~14 million.
Best neighborhoods: Live in Leblon or Ipanema — Copacabana if you want cheaper rent.
Safety: Serious crime exists; don’t flash valuables, avoid favela borders, stay aware at night.
Nightlife: ★★★★★ — Lapa on a Friday night, rooftop bars in Leblon, samba clubs, open-air street parties, and pre-Carnaval blocos.
Beach quality: ★★★★ — Ipanema and Copacabana are iconic, Prainha for less crowds. Best beaches outside the city.
Cost of living: $2,500–$3,500/month.
Surf scene: Prainha and Macumba on the west side; Saquarema a short trip away.
Language requirement: Portuguese basically mandatory — you can technically survive without it, but barely.
Best time of year: Dec–Mar for peak summer and Carnaval; Aug–Nov for warm weather with fewer tourists and lower prices. Good year around.
The UNDISPUTED best beach city for the red-blooded male in all of Latin America. Hell, maybe in the whole world.
Rio de Janeiro is truly a special place.
There’s just an energy here that you really cannot find anywhere else. Sure, Rio de Janeiro has her flaws, but she’ll keep you entertained and energized for years on end.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…
Every red-blooded male should spend at least one-month in Rio de Janeiro during their lifetime.
Point. Blank. Period.
Grab an apartment in Leblon or Ipanema. Hit the beach daily. Plan not to work whatsoever, as the minute you see the bikini-clads at the beach, your computer screen shall cease to be interesting.
Oh, and yes, a little bit of Portuguese-speaking ability will go a LONG way here — in every facet of your day-to-day life in Rio.
